What is it?

Aronia berry (chokeberry or black apple berry are its other names) is a member of the Rose family. It is a shrub that grows to a height of 12 feet and is a native of the northeastern US, Great Lakes region and Canada. It thrives in moist woods, thickets and cliffs. They can adapt to full sunlight or partial shade.

The fruits of the Aronia plant are pea-sized, with a deep purplish black color. Some varieties however are red or purple in color. Aronia berries are so juicy that it is often used in making juices and wines in Eastern Europe. However, once they turn ripe, the fruits immediately start to shrivel. Aronia berries have a very astringent flavor, like cranberries.

Some landscapers use the Aronia plant for the beautiful creamy white flowers that bloom late in the spring. The plant can also be utilised as a windbreaker in border plantings. Some of the popular Aronia berry varieties include Viking and Nero which are produced for its fruits. Autumn Magic and Iraqis Beauty are two varieties used as ornaments.
