What is it?

Shatavari is an herb of the asparagus family grown for its shoots. In fact, it looks akin to asparagus, only shatavari grows well underground. The shatavari plant is a climber—it has a thin, woody stem but with needle-like leaves, small white flowers and an extraordinary mass of long, fleshy roots. The taste of the roots of shatavari is sweet and mildly bitter.

Shatavari can be found growing in humid Indian subcontinent jungles and Sri Lanka, where it is endemic. However, it also grows in the foothills of Nepal and the Himalayas, making it a truly versatile plant species.

Also called “vrishya,” “shatuli,” and “wild asparagus,” shatavari has been used for more than 5,000 years as a female reproductive tonic. In fact, the name shatavari has been derived from the Sanskrit word which means “she who possesses a hundred husbands.” The ancients believe it can cure infertility, decreased libido and can even balance the acidity in the cervical area.
