Organic Raw Goji Berries
All berries are nutritious, but goji berries is the queen of them all. Also called Chinese
wolfberries and Tibetan goji berries, it is both a fruit and an herb because of its use and
nutritional value. Because of this, goji berries are considered a superfood by many health
experts.
A small bright red-orange fruit that is similar in size with
raisins, it has a sweet-sour taste comparable to dates and cherries. It has a mild herb-like
aftertaste which could have added to the reason why it is considered a herb.
Goji berries can be found in China, the Himalayas and other parts of Asia and Europe. But it
could be seen growing wild and in abundance in the hillsides right between Mongolia and Tibet
where the best condition for goji berry-growing is ideal.
There, where the soil is rich in nutrients, Tibetan goji berries thrive producing fruits that are
plump, with a deep red color and a rich, sweet taste.
Raw goji berries have been around for a long time. It has been utilized by the Chinese for
over 2,000 years. One of the earliest records found about this fruit was in a book titled “Shen
Nong Ben Cao Jing” in the year 250 BC. The book—considered the oldest existing Chinese book on
herbs—has been written by the Chinese emperor, Shen Nong. It detailed the agricultural and
medicinal uses of all the different herbs he knew—goji berries included.
Although not all health claims of goji berries are backed by
scientific studies, health experts agree on one thing: goji is a powerhouse of antioxidants,
amino acids, phytochemicals, complex compounds, polysaccharides, vitamins and minerals.
It has 18 amino acids—eight of them essential ones. It has 13% more protein than whole wheat, 15X
more iron than spinach, more beta-carotene than carrots, and more Vitamin C per ounce than
oranges. Goji berries even contain Vitamin E which can rarely be found in fruits.
Because this fruit is rich in antioxidants such as zeaxanthin and carotenoids, it also helps
protect the eyes from age-related macular degeneration and vision loss. Goji berries are known
to have a high absorbance capacity (ORAC or Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity value) which is
why it is considered the most powerful anti-ageing food in the world.
However, not all goji berries are created equal. The
difference in the quality of the final product begins early:
While other goji berries are forcefully
cultivated in areas where it cannot really thrive, our goji berries are grown in Tibet, 3,000
meters above sea level, where all the conditions for optimum growth are ideal.
From the moment the seeds are planted and all throughout its life, it is irrigated with the
fresh, clean waters from Yangtze, Yellow and Mekong rivers.
Our Tibetan goji berry product is also
organically grown. They are organically certified by Organic Farmers and Growers who is one of
UK’s leading organic control bodies. Because of this you can be sure that our product is not
tainted with pesticides, sulfite and other preservatives.
The quality of our goji berries doesn’t end
there. Oftentimes, goji berries lose some of its quality due to improper handling. While most
producers favor mechanical harvesting to save time and increase production, we prefer to
prioritize quality above all else so our goji berries are hand picked by individual pickers.
Ripe goji berries are fragile and in order to avoid damaging the fruit, it must be carefully
picked by hand.
After collecting an average of 30kg of fresh
goji berries by individual pickers, the fruits will then be carefully cleaned and laid out to dry
naturally under the sun until they look like red, dried raisins.
When this is achieved, the dried goji berries can then be stored. Our goji berries have a long
shelf life and can be stored for as long as 18 months without the aid of any preservatives.
The key to producing a quality final product
starts with growing the crops well, so that plump, flawless and naturally sweet and tasty fruits
are produced. Careful handling and proper processing are also factors we do not neglect because
it is our aim to provide organic dried goji berries that are of the very best quality.
Whether it’s used for baking, sprinkled in yoghurt and cereals, garnished in salads, mixed in
tea and other drinks, or even eaten directly from the bag (yes, it is that good!), our customers
can recognize the superior taste and quality of our goji berries.
Impact Foods can provide our high quality organic raw goji
berries in bulk, private label and white label in the UK and all over Europe. We can handle
everything from 20kg orders to container loads.
