Raw Organic Dried Golden Incan Berries
One of the great things about golden Inca berries is that it gives such a dense amount of nutrients without sacrificing on the taste department. Called gooseberries when fresh and golden Incan berries when dried, you, too, would love its sweet-tangy flavour that’s unlike any fruit you’ve ever tasted.
What is it?
Golden Inca berries or “Incanberry” for short, is a native of the tropical region of South America. They also grow only in high altitudes.
Like most plants, they have been around for centuries. The plant of the incaberry grows to about a metre in height. The fruits it produces are small with a colour tone ranging from bronze yellow to golden. A paper-thin calyx covers the fruits which serve as its protection from insects and birds. But aside from that, the cover also prolongs its freshness even after harvest.
Incaberry or “aguaymanto” in the Peruvian language and cape gooseberries in Africa, is not really a berry but belongs to the same botanical family as currants. The fruits spread out to Asia and Africa before it made its way to Europe in the 16th century where the British began developing varieties of it. It was about a hundred years later when incaberries finally reached the American shores.
Today, there are approximately 2,000 gooseberry cultivars but only two main types—American gooseberry and European gooseberry. The latter is said to be bigger and tastier of all gooseberry kinds.
Aside from the temptingly sweet-sour taste of golden Inca berries, it is far from lacking when it comes to nutritional content. Golden inca berries health benefits are in a class all their own.
Just a handful of this super fruit provides a hefty amount of anti-oxidants that helps in healing and inflammation. Let’s look at this in more detail.
Incaberries have polyphenols, carotenoids, and “withanolides,” a naturally-occurring steroidal lactone which is also the reason why it is considered an adaptogenic healing plant. The effect of withanolides in the human body is quite positive. It is shown to be beneficial to the endocrine system and can be useful in adjunctive therapy.
Golden Inca berries nutrition also include high amounts of fibre, fatty acids, phytosterols, vitamins and minerals (but low in calories—only 53 calories per 100 grams) which counters bacteria, reduce risk of kidneys and liver from damage, lowers fever and blood sugar, and even aids in weight management.
Traditional folk medicine practices have known the effects of eating gooseberries or incaberries but it is only now that modern day medicine is beginning to prove some of its health benefits.
