What is it?

Mucuna pruriens—cowhage or velvet beans as it is sometimes called—is a vine from the Fabaceae family. It is a fast growing legume that is endemic to South America, India, West Indies, Africa and other tropical areas.

The colour of the seeds of the beans can be brown or beige, sometimes black, depending on the variety. On the outside, the pod is velvety and can cause skin irritation.

In Daoism, mucuna is known as a “jing” enhancing herb—something that would nourish the body at the fundamental level.

In ancient ayurvedic medicine, mucuna is called “kapikacchu” and it has been used therapeutically since 1500 BC. Aside from being a nitrogen soil fixer and soil fertility restorer, the ancients also utilised this powerful plant to treat snakebites and other types of poisoning, mood swings, depression, sexual drive, stress and intestinal problems. They also used mucuna to balance disorders in the nervous and reproductive systems of the body.

What are its nutritional content and health benefits?

The ancients were not far off in how they perceived and used mucuna. Today, research has proven that some of the health claims of this plant are indeed scientifically sound and true.

Boosts mood and promotes sleep

Research has found that mucuna contains significant levels of L-Dopa (levodopa), an amino acid that turns into dopamine through a process called decarboxylation. Dopamine helps promote sound sleep. Mucuna also has DMT (dimethyltryptamine), bufotenine and 5-MeO-DMT. These are compounds which has similar properties with psychedelic plants. Although not a psychedelic plant itself, mucuna can be considered a spiritual plant as it promotes a general sense of well-being, relieves anxiety and regulates sleep.

Eases stress and increases sperm count

Men with psychological stress and fertility issues who participated in a study showed that after a supplementation of mucuna, the quality and count of their sperm increased. They also manifested a positive response to stressors. These effects can be accounted to the fact that mucuna can reactivate the body’s defense system and maintain homeostatis in the body.

Helps treat Parkinson’s disease

Research on the positive effects of mucuna on Parkinson’s disease is still in its preliminary stage, but so far, the results are positive. Initial studies indicate the L-dopa in mucuna can help in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease as Parkinson’s is partly characterized by the decrease of dopamine production by the brain.Other mucuna powder benefits include treating vaginal discharge, excessive menstrual bleeding, involuntary ejaculation and parasitic worms, building muscles among others.
