Organic Guarana Powder
There are many benefits of guarana, but it isn’t the most common superfood, so not a lot of people know what it is. But if you’ve tried energy drinks, then you most likely have already tried guarana.
Guarana is a common ingredient found in the likes of Red Bull, Full Throttle and other such drinks. It can also be found included in weight loss products. Why? And if it’s included in energy drinks, why is guarana considered a health food?
What is guarana?
Guarana (Paullinia cupana) is a climber plant that belongs to the maple family. It bears leathery brown, sometimes red fruits called guara-ná which means “fruits like the eyes of people.”
The fruit opens up when it’s ripe revealing a black seed that’s surrounded by a white flesh. It is striking how at this stage, the fruit looks like an eyeball. Once you’ve seen how the fruits and seeds look like, you’d know how apt its name is.
Almost the same size as a coffee bean, this versatile plant can be utilized from the fruits down to the roots. It is a native of Brazil, Venezuela and the Amazon and has two varieties: domestic and wild.
Sateré-Maué Indians have been using guarana since pre-Columbian times in food and drinks such as tea in order to take advantage of its effects. During the 17th century, A Jesuit missionary noted that tribesmen who ingest it have so much energy that they could go hunting for days without feeling tired or hungry.
Guarana—or Brazilian cocoa as it is sometimes called—has also been included in Brazilian soft drinks since 1909.
One of the most predominant benefits of guarana the ancients and today’s people are after is its stimulating effects. Guarana contains high amounts of caffeine—higher in fact than coffee—which, combined with tannin and other stimulants (theobromine and theophylline), can increase attention span, improve task performance, fight mental fatigue due to long periods of brain activity and even fatigue.
And because it is a natural stimulant (even the plant’s leaves contain 1-4% of caffeine), it also increases the body’s heart rate which ultimately leads down to faster metabolism and weight loss.
Guarana is also rich in epicatechines and catechins which help thin the blood and preserve human platelets. This could mean prevention of cardiovascular diseases, thrombosis and relief from headaches and migraines.
There are many other guarana benefits that we are just beginning to discover. This fruit also has calming properties and can ease stress and depression; it can also improve mood swings, treat diarrhea, water retention and bloating, detoxifies the body, regulate menstrual cycle and eliminate symptoms of PMS (Pre-Menstrual Syndrome). It’s even believed to have aphrodisiac properties.
Guarana products come in many forms. There’s guarana seed extract and guarana powder. But not all guarana powder products are the same. The difference lies on the quality of the raw guarana used, how it has been handled and finally, how it has been processed.
Harvest of our organic guarana fruits happens once a year and only when the guarana are fully mature. If only a few reaches maturation, the guarana fruits are picked individually by hand. If the whole bunch is ripe, the stem is manually broken off or snipped with a scissor.
We also do not use chemicals on our products even after harvest when the raw guarana fruits are being processed. Our guarana is organically certified by Organic Farmers and Growers who is one of UK’s leading organic control bodies.
At that temperature, the seeds will lose moisture, but still retain its nutrients and distinct flavor. The dried guarana fruits will then be grounded into a fine powder and immediately packed after. No preservatives or additives—just 100 percent raw organic guarana powder.
Enjoy our product in smoothies and other drinks, sweetened with honey, or flavored with cocoa to experience the boost offered by guarana.
